Design, transport and crane lifting: questions to settle early

Transportable modules are not automatically crane-liftable, stackable or compliant with shipping-container standards. Decide the actual moving and lifting conditions before a frame is fabricated.

A concept image, section-size list or nominal 40-foot length is not a lifting certificate. A qualified engineer must validate load paths, connections and the intended lifting/transport scenario before use.

1. Conversion or a new steel frame?

First identify whether the project alters an existing ISO container or uses a newly fabricated welded frame. A custom fabricated module should not be represented as ISO-certified without evidence. Non-stacking frames require different assumptions from units intended to stack.

2. Define the design basis

Collect overall external dimensions and clear internal dimensions; site wind/exposure; roof/floor loads; equipment, furniture, and occupants; lifting frequency; lift configuration; structural openings; and expected service life. Fix the grade and actual weights of specified steel members.

3. Gross lifting weight and centre of gravity

The lifting design needs the total lifted mass, including frame, floor, wall, roof, furniture, equipment, utilities and temporary fittings. It also needs the likely centre-of-gravity envelope, sling angles, dynamic factors and lift-point details. The payload figure alone is insufficient.

4. Open-front showroom and large glazing

Removing a substantial section of a long wall may reduce racking resistance. The engineer needs to model the complete load path and evaluate additional frames, bracing and connections. Transit shutters must have a separate restraint and vibration design; glazing itself must not be assumed to act as structural bracing.

5. Road transport and site access

Check loaded envelope, tie-down points, gross vehicle weight, loading scheme, access-road widths, turning, overhead restrictions, unloading space and applicable permits before dispatch. A dimension that fits the fabrication yard may not fit the route or site gate.

6. Required acceptance evidence

State who is responsible for reviewed calculations, steel certificates, welding acceptance, lifting-device certificates, inspection, weight confirmation and lift planning. A fabrication drawing is not the same as independent acceptance or a safe crane method statement.

Questions procurement teams ask

Are all 40-foot modules liftable from four upper corners?

No. Suitable lift points, verified connections, load cases, centre of gravity and lift geometry must be designed and checked for that particular unit.

Can a custom 10-foot-wide module be transported?

Feasibility depends on the chosen route, carrier, permissions and actual transport dimensions. Check the logistics scope before fabrication.

What is the first document to request?

A written design basis that records intended use, gross loaded weight, required movements, dimensions, openings and acceptance criteria.
