What to check before ordering a fabricated container

Use this procurement checklist to compare like-for-like quotations. It identifies questions for design and contracting; it is not a substitute for an approved engineering calculation, applicable code or third-party inspection.

1. Define whether the unit is a container conversion or new fabrication

Reusing a shipping container differs from designing a new steel-frame unit. Confirm intended dimensions, required service life, transport frequency, stacking requirement and acceptable structural modifications. A 40-foot label does not by itself establish lifting capacity or road compatibility.

2. Freeze a dimensioned and coordinated layout

Ask for internal clear dimensions, door/window positions, partitions, ceiling height, furniture and service-clearance details. For bunkhouses, confirm occupancy and egress; for site offices, workstation circulation; for wet areas, fixture service access; and for mobile showrooms, display support and visitor flow.

3. Require a written structural and lifting design basis

Identify payloads, their centres of gravity, floor loading, wind/environmental exposure, lifting points, sling geometry and transport load case. Large glazed openings, non-standard width and additional roof canopies change load paths. A visual mock-up is not engineering approval. Engage a competent engineer and independently validate lifting arrangements whenever needed.

4. Compare enclosure, MEP and thermal scope

Specify roof and wall construction, insulation material, coatings, glazing, ventilation, electrical distribution, earthing, lighting, plumbing and drainage. Ask which items are included, optional or buyer-supplied. Surface-temperature claims must not be presented as guaranteed indoor-temperature reductions.

5. Separate fabrication price from delivered-and-installed price

Make GST, transport, permits, crane hire, unloading, foundations, stairs, decks, wiring, sanitary connections, site commissioning and taxes visible as separate line items. Check commercial validity, payment milestones, exclusions, schedule assumptions and defect-rectification terms.

6. Specify evidence before dispatch

Agree which documents are required: approved drawings and revisions, material test certificates where applicable, inspection notes, service test records, equipment manuals, fabrication photographs, lift/transport documentation and as-built handover information. Availability of each item must be confirmed in writing, rather than assumed.

Compose a structured RFQ

Prefer a structured brief? The on-site RFQ builder formats project details for WhatsApp without saving a copy in a Heyaansh database.

Send a useful first RFQ

Share location, use case, preferred outer dimensions, plan or sketch, occupants or equipment loads, electrical/sanitation needs, intended moves, expected quantity and target commissioning date. Heyaansh can then discuss a scope-specific quote instead of an unsupported unit-price comparison.
